Pumps and the ideal hydraulic fluid

All components within a hydraulic system are important to keep it running, which includes using the correct hydraulic fluid. Pumps and valves are no exception and when it comes to lubrication, different pumps need different solutions. However, for all components the hydraulic fluid used should inhibit corrosion, meet viscosity requirements, show thermal stability and be easy to identify should a leak occur.

Vane pumps are subject to high amounts of wear. The vanes are inserted into the rotor slots, and through the continuous spinning the vanes are continuously in contact with the inner surface of the cam rings. When wearing occurs the vanes protrude further out of the slots. Vane pumps are not suitable for critical high-pressure hydraulic systems where contamination and fluid quality are difficult to control. Fluid to be used for this type of pump relies on the fluid’s anti-wear additives and requires a viscosity range of 14 to 160 centistokes (cSt) at operating temperature.

Piston pumps are known as the most versatile and durable pump that offers a range of options for any type of system. This type of piston produces very little noise and produces higher operating pressures. Piston pumps exhibit less wear than other pumps and operate at a normal fluid viscosity range of 10 to 160 cSt at operating temperatures.

Gear pumps can be found as internal pumps or external pumps with each one having a variety of subtypes. This type of pump develops flow by carrying fluid between the teeth of a meshing gear set making it more tolerant of fluid contamination. Internal pumps can provide a wide range of viscosity choices with the highest being up to 2 200cSt. This type of gear pump is extremely efficient and offers quiet operations. External pumps are an inexpensive, easily maintained, mid-pressure, mid-volume, fixed placement delivery system. However, their viscosity range if limited to 300cSt.

There are many purposes of hydraulic fluid. Its role ranges from heat transferer to power transferer to a lubrication. When using the correct fluid the system will continue to work as it was designed, offering peace of mind and assurance that you will receive the best possible results.
